Choose Faith Over Fear
The uncertainty of the COVID19 has created a storm in our present day ̶ a storm that can produce anxiety and fear in our children as well as ourselves. As parents, we want to protect our children and calm their fears. They may fear getting the virus or having a parent or grandparent contract it. The changes in their school routine and limitations on social interaction may cause them anxiety. How can we help them navigate this troubled time?
It has been said that fear and faith cannot co-exist, one or the other will rule in our hearts pushing the other out. If this is true, then we must instill faith. Faith is trusting in someone or something. Who or what can help? Who has the answers and who can bring us peace?
Faith is Our Anchor
Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). In a time of turmoil, faith is our anchor and gives us hope for a brighter future. Storms come unexpectedly. The object of our faith determines how we handle the trials of life and ride out the storms.
Children will look to parents who they instinctively trust for answers. I remember as a child witnessing my mother’s faith as a single parent of three. She often sat silently on our front porch for hours. She returned to church and read her prayer book. Somehow this reassured me that things would be okay. It was clear that God was her refuge in times of trouble and that brought me comfort. Sharing your faith with your children can serve as an anchor and source of security for them. Faith is a gift that comes from hearing and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). Scripture offers an understanding of the sovereignty and character of God and the assurance that He is good and is in control.
Remember the story of David and Goliath, a young Jewish boy who faced a Philistine giant with the fate of Israel at stake? Armed with a sling and five stones, David slayed the armor-clad Goliath. Having experienced the faithfulness of God in the past, David’s unwavering faith was his assurance of victory. Later in his life, David again reveals his faith when he cries out, “When I am afraid, I will trust in you” (Psalm 56:3).
God Offers Peace
As we face the social, physical, emotional, and financial trials brought about by this virus, that could cause us to fear, God reminds us that we can know peace in every situation: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7).
We have no control over the virus or government decisions to shut schools and limit social gatherings. We cannot control the loss of jobs, loved ones getting sick, or empty grocery store shelves. However, parents can set an example of faith amidst the challenges we face during this pandemic. It is important to communicate hope and reassure your children. We can choose to focus on the One who is in control and truth rather than the anxious thoughts of our heart. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:25-34: Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?… Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Storms of life often approach without warning. Like the disciples, who cried out to Jesus when their boat was close to capsizing, we too can call upon the One who calms the storms (Luke 8:22-25). May your faith overcome any fear and strengthen you during this time of uncertainty.
